1.77 million attic stairways sold over 14 years need a repair kit, and owners have to come forward. Reaching an unregistered installed base is the goal the recall leaves open.

What happened

The story, from the record.

On August 6, 2026 the Consumer Product Safety Commission announced the recall of about 1,770,000 Louisville Ladder attic stairway ladders sold in the United States, plus about 13,054 in Canada. The stairways were sold from November 2012 through July 2026 at Home Depot, Lowe's, Do It Best, Orgill and on Amazon, for $170 to $600.

The bolts that hold the stairway can break, and the stairway can fall. Louisville Ladder had received 11 reports of bolt breakage, including one injury to the neck, head and back.

The remedy is a free repair kit. To get one, an owner has to register on the recall site or call the recall line. Most attic stairways are installed by builders and remodelers in homes that have since changed hands; the current owner rarely knows the brand, let alone that a recall exists.

Fourteen years of sales, five retail channels, no registration data. The notice is the easy part. Finding the homes is the goal.
