Goals from the news

ALDI set out to open a record 225 US stores in 2025 on the way to 800 by 2028

A record 225-plus store openings in one year, each needing a site, permits, local suppliers and staff. Entering a market is a goal that restarts in every town.

What happened

The story, from the record.

In February 2025 ALDI said it would open more than 225 US stores during the year, the most in its roughly 50 years in the country, as part of a plan to add about 800 stores by the end of 2028 at a cost of around $9 billion.

The openings spread across the Southeast, Northeast and Midwest, into Southern California and Arizona, and for the first time into Las Vegas. Part of the count comes from converting Winn-Dixie and Harveys stores acquired from Southeastern Grocers. Fox Business reported that a quarter of US households now shop at ALDI, double the share of six years earlier.

Every one of those stores is a market entry in miniature: a site, a permit calendar, local contractors, regional suppliers for fresh goods, dozens of hires, and the outreach that fills the parking lot on day one.

A national expansion is announced once. It is executed 225 times, in 225 towns, each on its own clock.

How OneShot would run it

The goal this leaves open.

OneShot was not involved in this event. This is how the goal it describes would run as one OneShot goal: the objective, the steps per case, and the list price of each.

The goal

For each new market, line up local suppliers, service contractors and community partners before opening day, and have the first week's calendar full.

  1. 01

    Brief the market

Commission a cited brief on the trade area: competitors, wage levels, the permit calendar. Then list every supplier, contractor, school and community group inside it.

    Qualify and find the buyer

Read each prospect's site, enrich the company, and find the owner or the buyer with a verified address. Prospects that fail the fit rules are dropped here, not after a call.

    Reach them

Email first and read the replies; call the ones who do not answer. Meetings land on the regional team's calendar, and terms that need a decision wait for an approver.

    Watch the permits

Check the city's permit portal for every open application each week, and flag any that stall before they move the opening date.

    Announce the opening

Build the store's opening page with a sign-up form, then mail the neighbourhood in the two weeks before the doors open.
