Edison settled an Eaton Fire insurer's claim at 52 cents on the dollar, with 1,500 suits open

One insurer recovered 52% of what it paid policyholders after the Eaton Fire. Subrogation is a goal carriers pursue claim by claim, for years, or give up on.

What happened

The story, from the record.

On September 15, 2025, Edison International disclosed that Southern California Edison had agreed to pay a subrogation claimant 52 cents for every dollar the insurer had paid its policyholders for the Eaton Fire, up to an undisclosed cap. The claimant had paid about $500 million as of July 31, 2025. SCE admitted no liability.

The company's 10-K for 2025 shows how much remained. As of February 11, 2026, SCE faced about 1,500 unsettled Eaton Fire lawsuits with around 20,000 individual plaintiffs, plus subrogation and public-entity plaintiffs including the United States, Los Angeles County, Pasadena and Sierra Madre. SCE said its equipment was likely associated with the ignition and that it could not estimate a range of loss.

SCE accrued $1,134 million for the Eaton Fire in 2025, paid $237 million, and carried a balance of $897 million at year end.

Every carrier that paid an Eaton Fire claim has a recovery to pursue. Each one means a demand, documents, follow-up and, often, a wait measured in years. The claims that are small relative to that effort are the ones that never get worked.

How OneShot would run it

The goal this leaves open.

OneShot was not involved in this event. This is how the goal it describes would run as one OneShot goal: the objective, the steps per case, and the list price of each.

The goal

Open and pursue a subrogation file for every paid claim above the carrier's floor, and keep each one moving until it is settled or closed with a reason.
